Sabah's Blue Economy: I'm a Sabahan Overseas
I'm a Sabahan living overseas - Article written by Munira Ishak

Sabah will always have a special place in my heart. While I live overseas, I’ve never stopped looking for ways to contribute to my home state’s development. Despite its incredible natural beauty and rich culture, Sabah still faces significant challenges—particularly in poverty reduction and infrastructure development.

The Challenges Sabah Faces

Sabah’s poverty rates remain the highest in Malaysia. In 2022, Sabah's poverty rate was 19.7%, with extreme poverty standing at 1.2%, significantly higher than the national average. Geography plays a role in these infrastructure challenges, leading to inadequate road networks, water supply, and electricity in rural areas. There is an urgent need for targeted development strategies to ensure no community is left behind.

April 2024: Sabah in Dubai

In April, the Sabah State Government, represented by Hon. Datuk Hj. Rosmadi bin Datu Sulai and Dr. Firdausi Suffian, visited Dubai to raise awareness about Blue Economy development—a model focused on using marine resources sustainably to create jobs and protect ecosystems. During a courtesy visit with the Malaysian Business Council UAE, I was inspired by their vision. I facilitated discussions between Red Sea Reef Builders and Sabah Maju Jaya regarding coral reef restoration and community development.

October 2024: Sabah Blue Economy Forum

Later in October, I attended the Sabah Blue Economy Forum, where David Washbrook spoke on "Blue Economy: Social Inclusion and Community Empowerment." His insights on coral reef restoration resonated deeply. We visited local villages and islands, witnessing both the potential and the challenges Sabah faces.

Looking Ahead

I have high hopes for the initiatives started this year. Sustainable practices hold the key to Sabah’s future. I’m committed to supporting the Sabah State Government’s development plans, bridging global expertise with local opportunities.
