Sabah's Blue Economy: I'm a Sabahan Overseas

Blog written by Munira Ishak

Sabah will always have a special place in my heart. While I live overseas, I’ve never stopped looking for ways to contribute to my home state’s development. Despite its incredible natural beauty and rich culture, Sabah still faces significant challenges—particularly in poverty reduction and infrastructure development.

The Challenges Sabah Faces

Sabah’s poverty rates remain the highest in Malaysia, and its rural communities continue to struggle with inadequate infrastructure and basic services. Here’s what the numbers tell us:

  • Poverty Rates: In 2022, Sabah's poverty rate was 19.7%, the highest in the country. (Source: Statista). The extreme poverty rate in Sabah stands at 1.2%, significantly higher than the national average of 0.2%. (Source: Malay Mail)

  • Infrastructure Challenges: Sabah’s public infrastructure lags behind, partly due to its challenging geography as Malaysia’s second-largest state. The state continues to face issues with inadequate road networks, water supply, and electricity, particularly in rural areas.

These highlight the urgent need for targeted development strategies to address poverty and infrastructure gaps, ensuring that no community is left behind.

April 2024: Sabah in Dubai

In April, the Sabah State Government represented by Hon. Datuk Hj. Rosmadi bin Datu Sulai, Chief Coordinating Officer, Secretariat of Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) and Chief Executive Officer of Invest Sabah, Dr. Firdausi Suffian, visited Dubai to raise awareness about Blue Economy development—a model focused on using marine resources sustainably to create jobs, boost economies, and protect ecosystems.

During the courtesy visit with the Malaysian Business Council UAE, I was inspired by their vision and speed of action. As part of these efforts, I connected Red Sea Reef Builders with Sabah Maju Jaya, facilitating discussions on coral reef restoration and community development. This initiative focuses on creating sustainable livelihoods and expertise for Sabah’s communities.

October 2024: Sabah Blue Economy Forum

Later in October, I attended the Sabah Blue Economy Forum, where David Washbrook delivered a powerful talk titled "Blue Economy: Social Inclusion and Community Empowerment." His insights on coral reef restoration and community-driven solutions resonated deeply with the forum’s focus on uplifting local communities.

But the trip wasn’t just about the forum. We visited local villages, nearby islands, and a heritage village, witnessing both the potential and the challenges Sabah faces. Seeing it all through David’s perspective gave me fresh insights into how far we are from achieving a thriving Sabah—but also how much promise lies ahead if we act decisively.

Looking Ahead

I have high hopes for the initiatives we started this year. Sustainable practices like coral reef restoration and community empowerment hold the key to Sabah’s future. I’m committed to staying active in supporting Sabah State Government’s development plans, bridging global expertise with local opportunities, and helping my home state realize its full potential.

💡 Let’s work together to bring positive, lasting change to our communities. What’s one initiative close to your heart that’s making a difference? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
